| Electronic music has gone glocal. In a world parallel to that of international pop music, a widespread planetary network of alternative composers is growing. They are radicalising the conventions of electro-acoustic music, experimental dance and computerised improvisation. They invite participation and raise exciting questions, such as: can social commitment and abstract electronics be combined? And, how do you get the world and its problems in and out of your computer? Is there such a thing as ‘sonic activism’? From American alternative globalists on the Mexican border we hear a resounding ‘yes’. The same from the anti-Haider activists in Vienna and writers and performers in Berlin, London and New York. In Palestine we saw how other media are also thrown into the struggle and learnt how artists make good use of their instruments in time of war. We asked musicians to look, on the spot or by way of the media, for material for a twenty-first-century equivalent of the sixties protest song.
