Els Opsomer (2017)
Étude d’un paysage – Studie van een landschap – 1992
Dit werk, haar eindwerk aan La Cambre, bestaat uit een reeks offset proefdrukken van 70 x 50 cm. Aan de basis liggen foto’s die Els Opsomer maakte van agrarische landschappen met telkens een technisch element. Voorbij het serene en het authentieke, tonen ze het landschap als product – even herkenbaar als bevreemdend.
Els Opsomer maakte de foto’s met een technische camera. Zo een logge camera geeft iets rustgevend aan de opname. Het grote negatief zorgt voor een dito scherpte.
De zwart-wit foto’s werden in drie verschillende offsetkleuren geprint: groen, rood en blauw. Els Opsomer noemt het haar monochromen. Maar in tegenstelling tot wat we verwachten van het monochroom in de schilderkunst, gaan deze beelden voorbij aan de abstractie. Ze tonen de leegte van het landschap. De rust van dat landschap zorgt voor de energie van het beeld.
De inspiratie van het monochroom geeft deze landschappen iets contemplatief. Het geeft de beelden een zekere vibratie. Het evoceert de quasi onreproduceerbare en nauwelijks waarneembare diepte van het landschap.
Goethe on color:
Red: “The effect of this color is as peculiar as its nature. It conveys an impression of gravity and dignity, and at the same time of grace and attractiveness.”
Blue: “As a hue it is powerful — but it is on the negative side, and in its highest purity is, as it were, a stimulating negation. Its appearance, then, is a kind of contradiction between excitement and repose. … As the upper sky and distant mountains appear blue, so a blue surface seems to retire from us.”
Green: “If the two elementary colors {yellow and blue} are mixed in perfect equality so that neither predominates, the eye and the mind repose on the result of this junction as upon a simple color. The beholder has neither the wish nor the power to imagine a state beyond it.
