Dierk Schmidt (D) – SIEV-X, triptych

Y_ZONE
Y, the second unknown, makes critical comments on the gaps in the flow of images. A time for reflection on what we do not see; the images of emptiness.

Dierk Schmidt(D) – SIEV-X, 2001-2005, schilderijen op plasticfolie – paintings on plastic foil
There are no pictures of the boat that sank between Australia and Indonesia on 19th October 2001, even though there were 397 people on board. Not of the 44 survivors nor of the Australian Coast Guard. Perhaps this is because the first were refugees and the second had already identified the boat as a Suspected Illegal Entry Vessel or SIEV. Dierk Schmidt fills in the missing pictures, just as Géricault had done more than a hundred years previously for the survivors of the Medusa. SIEV-X (the X stands for the nameless boat) brings together the historical work of Géricault (and his idealistic neighbour in the Louvre, Delacroix) with the topical issue of boat refugees and an idealistic Nike clip in which Brazilian footballers get through airport security without the slightest trouble.

Thomas Köner (D) – Suburbs of the Void, 2004, video, 13′

It is sometimes claimed that the suburbs are only shown when something awful happens there. The recent riots in the French banlieues seem to prove this. But is this really true? Is this suburbia too not always under observation? Even when no one is looking? For this video, just as for the earlier ‘Banlieue du Vide’ and ‘Nuuk’, Thomas Köner collected images from webcams. They are empty pictures of a deserted square. The city is Helsinki . The polar winter provides a carpet of snow like a projection screen. We hear people’s voices but do not see them. As if this were a film not to watch. Unheimlich.

Unheimlich.

Herman Asselberghs (B) – a.m./p.m., 2004, video, 45′
In ‘a.m/p.m.’ there are no more people to be seen. Photos of cosmopolitan cityscapes are systematically scanned. On a soundtrack you hear a woman’s voice recounting her story and that of the world; about images of today, about a journey. Her monologue is a fictionalised version of the impressions that Asselberghs picked up during his trip to Palestine . He consciously chose for the film to show the explosive and mediatized situation in the region by taking an absolutely minimalist audiovisual approach. The fact that he creates a detached view by using a female voice instead of his own, coupled with deviating from a run-of-the-mill documentary style, produces a complex approach to his ideas and feelings on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

Lieven De Boeck (B) / Fireworks II. Le Bleu du Ciel. II.09.01, 2002, four ymck prints and four maquettes
The excess of the twenty-first century is also the ultimate (and inevitable) illustration of Virilio’s aesthetics of disappearance. In this work the architect Lieven de Boeck sketches a previously unseen picture of the events of 11th September 2001. The target is the Twin Towers , New York ‘s beacon of modern architecture. The architects were Mohamma Atta and Marwan Al-Shehhi. The result is fireworks, an entirely new space of excess.
