Text & Context Seminar for SIC, May-June 2015

Reflections on the relation between form and content through the critical analysis of texts and contexts. Topics include spectatorship, representation, resistance, exotism, voyeurism and more.

This year’s Text & Context Seminar will start from a certain shift from image to imagination in my personal work as a critic and curator. I will elaborate on that through the work of Georges Didi-Huberman, a French art historian and philosopher and also occasional curator, more in particular his ‘Atlas’ project: his book and exhibition on the work of art historian Aby Warburg. We will read the first chapter of Didi-Hubermans book. After a general introduction (May 7), each section of the text will be presented by participants in relation to their own personal practice (May 22, 29 and June 4). The shift here is not only from image to imagination, but also from the artistic to the curatorial practice. Participants will demonstrate how to use texts, ideas, images, works from other artists, writers, curators to create new contexts for their personal practice. Additional material in relation to the Atlas and the projects will be brought by participants and myself.
