SonicSquare #6 – program

What has become of the ‘bedroom politics’ of the nineties? At that time, Grrrrls were making films with dolls as actors and the Fisher Price camera as a weapon. DIY-boys carried their Gameboys and discarded computers from the bedroom to the stage. Today these girls and boys are sitting together at the multimedia computer. They meet each other through the net and themselves create the channels by which they publish their work. Sound and image form a single organic whole, produced with the same hardware and software. Boundaries fade when MP3s and Flash clips are exchanged and adapted during internet stops in Brussels or LA.
Electronic music (a worn-out label for the biodiversity of digital and analogue, and audio and visual adventure) has gone glocal. A widespread planetary network of ‘otherly’ composers is growing in a world parallel to that of global pop music. They are radicalising the conventions of electro-acoustic music, experimental dance and computerised improvisation. They invite us to participate. And pose such stimulating questions as ‘can social engagement and abstract electronics be combined?’ and ‘how do you get the world (and its problems) in and out of your computer?’ ‘Is there such a thing as ‘bedroom activism’?’
[sonic] square sends two three-day reports from the worldwide bedroom factory, with music, films, webwork and games.
The first three-day session is a trilogy in itself. Wednesday has a continuous evening programme where you can see the performers at work from close-up. They will speak to you personally while you move around the room from one work station to the next. The activities will occasionally be halted for a short concert, a demonstration or a film or video screening on stage. The programme for Thursday comprises film and video screenings. Friday is a ‘classic’ concert evening. Each evening closes with a musical act by (k-raa-k)3  3 performers and the self-service video library remains open until closing time. The workshops are in the afternoon.
