Binnen haar tentoonstellingsprogramma maakt M ruimte voor een presentatie die voortvloeit uit een specifiek onderzoek over bijzondere thema’s uit de hedendaagse beeldcultuur. Hiervoor nodigt M telkens een externe gastcurator uit. Voor deze tentoonstelling werd Pieter Van Bogaert gevraagd.
Blijven Kijken / Ce qui nous regarde / Dropouts is een zoektocht naar de materie van de media. De materie van de media? Dat zijn de pixels waaruit beelden verschijnen, maar ook de figuren die in die pixels verdwijnen. Het gaat over dropouts: de pixels en figuren aan de rand van het kader die de media – voor even – tastbaar maken. De tentoonstelling brengt beelden die terugkijken, die de kijker aanbelangen, die de kijker – al is het maar voor even – bewegen. Het gaat over een recente geschiedenis en over mediakunst in de ruimste zin van het woord: van kunstenaars – schilders, videomakers, fotografen, geluids- en computerkunstenaars, vormgevers of schrijvers – die nadenken over de media waarmee ze werken.

Le M prévoit dans son programme annuel d’expositions une présentation découlant d’une recherche spécifique sur des thèmes particuliers de la culture contemporaine de l’image. Il invite à cette occasion un commissaire externe et a sollicité pour cette exposition les services de Pieter Van Bogaert.
Blijven Kijken / Ce qui nous regarde / Dropouts est une recherche vers la matière des médias. La matière des médias, ce sont les pixels qui forment les images, mais aussi les personnages qui disparaissent dans ces pixels. Ce sont des dropouts, ces pixels et figures en bordure du cadre que le média rend palpables, un instant. L’exposition présente des images qui nous regardent, si ce n’est que brièvement. Il s’agit d’une histoire récente et de l’art des médias au sens large du terme: d’artistes – peintres, vidéastes, photographes, artistes du son et de l’ordinateur, graphistes ou écrivains – qui réfléchissent sur les médias qu’ils utilisent.

M invariably reserves a slot in its exhibition programme for a presentation stemming from specific research into unusual themes from contemporary visual culture. An external curator is invited to mount it and on this occasion that was Pieter Van Bogaert.
Blijven Kijken / Ce qui nous regarde / Dropouts is an exploration on the matter of media. The matter of media? That starts with the pixels from which images appear, but also the figures which disappear into those pixels. It is about dropouts: the pixels and figures on the edge of the frame which make media momentarily tangible. The exhibition presents images that look back at us (ce qui nous regarde), that concern the viewer, that move the viewer – even if only for a brief moment of time. It is about a recent history and about media art in the broadest sense of the word: artists – painters, video makers, photographers, sound and computer artists, designers and writers – who ponder the media they work with.

As part of the exhibition, M is presenting three Thursday-evening programmes:
28/02 | 19.30 : screening of Videovoid: Text by David Larcher and Not With a Bang but a Whimper by Stefaan Quix, followed by a Q&A session with Stefaan Quix.
28/03 | 20.00: Emiliano Battista presents the book After Empire by Herman Asselberghs & Dieter Lesage (read his presentation here), with a screening of nocturne #2 by Pieter Geenen and Swang Song by Anouk De Clerq, Jerry Galle and Anton Aeki.
11/04 | 20.00: screening of Presto, Perfect Sound and one, two, many by Manon de Boer, with a talk/performance by Christof Migone.
The talks will be held in the forum at M.
The talk on 28/02 will be in Dutch, the talks on 28/03 and 11/04 in English.

April 16, 2pm: SIC presents Text & Context at M
SoundImageCulture (SIC) is a workspace in which a group of artists-filmmakers-anthropologists assist professional audiovisual artists and social scientists in the realization of their personal projects. Pieter Van Bogaert, curator of ‘Blijven Kijken / Ce qui nous regarde / Dropouts’ at M, also curates the ‘Text & Context’ seminars for SIC. The first meeting of this year’s ‘Text & Context’ will take place at M. After a short introduction on the series will follow a general introduction on the exhibition from which material will be used in the three remaining meetings to be held in April, May and June at the Pianofabriek in Brussels. The presentation will be followed by a guided tour through the exhibition.
