EXCESS
images and bodies in times of excess

It’s a homeopathic experience – more images to get cured of the existing ones.
It’s part of the potlatch – a feast in which images can also be presents (or sacrifices?).
It’s a reality check.
The 11th September attacks, live on radio and television; photos of torture in Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq worldwide on the web; explosions in London seen immediately on the mobile; nothing happens without there being images of it. We are inundated by them, from the newspapers in the early morning to the late-night news on television. Or is that just how it feels? Are we being blinded by a surfeit of images or a lack of them? Do we see the same images too often and is there a need for greater diversity? Perhaps we have to conclude that there are never enough images for a correct representation of reality.
These questions and others link EXCESS to Jean-Luc Godard’s ‘Histoire(s) du Cinéma’. This film history, which is also a history of the 20th century, pays as much attention to the films that were not made as to those that were. EXCESS intends to transpose this comprehensive project to the digital era. Which images do we see (or see too much) and which do we not (or too little)? And another important point: how do we react to these pictures? What feeling arises amongst all these pictures?
A search for the pictures behind the reality isinevitably also about the reality behind the pictures. It is a visual experience, but certainly a physical one too – a confrontation with the pictures and with the body with which we view them. This makes each image different for everybody. In agreement with Godard, we can already conclude that this exhibition will not present the right image, just an image: “pas une image juste, juste une image”.

EXCES – beelden en lichamen in buitensporige tijden
een tentoonstelling – 12 februari tot 21mei 2006

Het is een homeopathische ervaring – meer beelden om te genezen van de bestaande.
Het is deel van de potlatch – een feest waarin ook beelden geschenken kunnen zijn (of offers?).
Het is een reality check.
De aanslagen van 11 september 2001 rechtstreeks op radio en televisie; foto’s van folteringen in de Irakese Abu Ghraib-gevangenis wereldwijd op het web; ontploffingen in Londen onmiddellijk op de gsm: er gebeurt niets of er bestaan beelden van. We worden erdoor overspoeld, van ‘s morgens vroeg in de krant tot ‘s avonds laat op televisie. Of is dat slechts een gevoel? Worden we verblind door een teveel aan beelden of door een tekort? Zien we teveel dezelfde beelden en is er nood aan meer diversiteit? Misschien moeten we besluiten dat er nooit genoeg beelden zijn voor een juiste weergave van de realiteit?
Met deze en andere vragen sluit EXCES aan bij Jean-Luc Godard’s Histoire(s) du Cinéma . Godard’s filmgeschiedenis – die tevens een geschiedenis is van de 20 ste eeuw – schenkt evenveel aandacht aan de films die wel werden gemaakt als aan de films die niet werden gemaakt. Dat Borgesiaanse project wil EXCES vertalen naar het digitale tijdperk. Welke beelden zien we wel (of te veel?) en welke niet (of te weinig)? En belangrijk: hoe reageren we op die beelden? Wat is het gevoel dat ontstaat tussen die beelden?
Een zoektocht naar de beelden achter de realiteit, gaat onvermijdelijk ook over de realiteit achter de beelden. Het is een visuele ervaring, maar zeker ook een fysieke – een confrontatie met de beelden én met het lichaam waarmee we kijken. Dat maakt elk beeld voor iedereen anders. Met Godard kunnen we nu al besluiten dat deze tentoonstelling geen juist beeld zal brengen, maar slechts een beeld: “ pas une image juste, juste une image ”.
